| Boy Scouts Volunteer at the Museum |
| Local Boy Scouts are teaming up with Museum staff to carry out needed repairs on the Pinta. Scouts and Leaders from Boy Scout Troop 87 of the South Texas Council worked with Museum staff to remove the the worn half deck on the Pinta. Scouts will come back on a periodic basis as repairs to the Pinta continue. Pinta is open for public tours during this reconstruction process. |

Columbus and his crew knew the compounding power of simple machines. The lever, pulley, wheel and axle, and inclined plane were used aboard on a daily basis to help the crew accomplish daily tasks. In 1983, under the auspices of the Spanish Navy and the Institute of Naval History and Culture, Jose Maria Martinez-Hidalgo was engaged in the study of the three Columbus Ships. Jose Luis Lopez-Martinez was contracted to draw up the construction plans and carry out the strategic planning to create the replicas.
