Minerals are the building blocks of the earth. They form this planet. There are over 2000 different minerals, but fewer than twenty make up most of the earth’s crust. Some occur by themselves. Others are found in combination that we call rocks.

Hurricanes form only over the warm tropical oceans near but not at the equator. Several form in the Atlantic each year and either curve away from the coastline, hit the United States or continue into Central America.

The discovery of the Saxet and Corpus Christi Oil fields in the 1930’s was an economic boom to Corpus Christi. In 1937, the peak year for the Saxet Oil field, it yielded 13 million barrels. By comparison, only ½ million barrels is produced within the city limits of Corpus Christ today. Petroleum remains the major product shipped through the Port of Corpus Christi.

In the South Texas bays and the Laguna Madre salt concentration can be unusually high (hypersaline) or unusually low (hyposaline). Clouds of fine dirt and plant fragments block the sunlight. Temperatures fluctuate widely and rapidly. Conditions are especially hard in the hyposaline habitats where rivers pour into the bays, and marshes and swamps edge the shallows.
