The discovery of the Saxet and Corpus Christi Oil fields in the 1930’s was an economic boom to Corpus Christi. In 1937, the peak year for the Saxet Oil field, it yielded 13 million barrels. By comparison, only ½ million barrels is produced within the city limits of Corpus Christ today. Petroleum remains the major product shipped through the Port of Corpus Christi.

In the South Texas bays and the Laguna Madre salt concentration can be unusually high (hypersaline) or unusually low (hyposaline). Clouds of fine dirt and plant fragments block the sunlight.
